Bridgwater, Somerset - A Mixture of Past and Present

Bridgwater, in Somerset County of UK is a small town, rich in historical heritage, and once known as a major port situated on the south western part of the United Kingdom. Its name is derived from its French history, and the drop of the letter 'e' in its name is testimony to that. The name of the town is because it built a bridge over the River Taunton, with the King's Charter.

In the earlier centuries, ships used to moor near the Bridge, and the goods for internal Somerset would be carried overland. In turn, the ships used to carry Bridgwater clay bricks, known for its hardness and quality.

In fact the famed Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up British Parliament hatched his plan here sometime in the 1600s. Even today, after the plot was discovered, under the aegis of the then King, bornfires are lit to commemorate the occasion!

Today, the town is a vibrant mixture of the past and the present. It is a quiet, quaint little town which has its own historical monuments, landscaped gardens, and in line in British tradition, preserves its own, go today, values.

Among the many areas that are must see are the Admiral Blake Museum (for it is believed that Admiral Robert Blake was born here; he was Lord Cromwell's Admiral). The Somerset Brick and Tile Museum displays the olden methods of making bricks and tiles of clay for which the town as world famous.

The best way to see Bridgwater is to take walks, which are conducted by the local tourism authorities, which meanders around the small town, taking you through the plains, and the small hills and dales of what Somerset is famous for.

The carnival of Bridgwater is most famous for it is still carried forward since its very beginning in the early 1400s, and starts from November every year, till January/February in the next calendar year.

Accommodation ranges from the cheap to expensive, and suits all pockets. There are a wide variety of local eateries, ranging from the quaint old ones carried lovingly from generation to generation, and modern ones too.

While it has its own history, the impact of modern culture is also felt. There are a number of music halls, clubs, cinema halls, dance halls, et al for the more modish traveler.
