Knaresborough - A Picturesque Town in North Yorkshire in the UK

Author: Steve Allanson

Source: ezinearticles.com

The delightful town of Knaresborough is situated just to the north of the larger North Yorkshire town of Harrogate, both are sighted on the river Nidd which flows down from the picturesque Nidderdale. The town is dominated by the steep valley which reaches down to the river along with its parklands, riverside walks, boating, the famous Knareborough Lido and fantastic views of the spectacular Victorian railway viaduct.

Mother Shipton

Mother Shipton or Ursula Southeil was a Yorkshire prophetess who lived in the time of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. She reputedly made a number of predictions including the Great Fire of London. Legend has it that she was born illegitimately in 1488 in a cave near the town of Knaresborough. She married a local carpenter, Toby Shipton and was made famous soon after her death when books about her prophecies and sayings became best sellers of the day.

The cave where she was reputed to be born is now an enduring local attraction incorporating the cave itself and also the famous petrifying well where waters seeping down through the local rocks leave a layer of limestone on any object left in the waters for long enough.

Other Local Characters

As well as Mother Shipton Knaresbough has been home to a number of famous or infamous characters from history.

Carved into the cliffs of the gorge near to the centre oft he town is the home of hermit St Robert. This can still be visited today.

Blind Jack or John Metcalf is little known but is one of Yorkshires most remarkable residents. He was born in Knaresborough in 1717 and became blind following infection with small pox when he was only six years old. Despite his disability he learned to play the fiddle and whilst doing so he met and fell in love with the daughter of a local hotel. However he then got involved with another woman and had to run away to Scarborough to avoid marrying her.

After numerous adventures he finally walked back to Yorkshire all the way from London and eloped with his first love, Dolly Benson, the day before she was due to be married having believed she had been left for good by John. They lived happily and, after other business ventures and a spell fighting in the disturbances surrounding Bonnie Prince Charlie, Blind Jack was eventually to become a master road builder contributing to the improvement of many significant local roads.

Not bad for a lad blind from the age of 6.

In addition to these the village of Scotton near the town was home for a time to Guy Fawkes and Richard II was imprisoned int he town, if only for one night.

The Railway Viaduct

Built by engineer Thomas Grainger in 1846 the four spans of the viaduct carry the railway some 78 feet above the river Nidd. The, go today, building of the viaduct was not straightforward, collapsing when near completion and taking another three and a half years to rebuild.

The end result was certainly worthwhile with its crenelated towers and hexagonal refuges which stand on top of the abutments on the approaches to the bridge proper.

Knaresborough Castle

Built in the 12 century but with major refurbishments carried out by Edward I and Edward II in the 14th century the castle was besieged for six months by parliamentarians in the English Civil war and was partially demolished following the surrender of the royalist forces.

Prior to that somewhat ignominious end the castle had been the favourite summer residence of the wife of Edward III and had also been owned and occupied by John of Gaunt and Henry Bolingbroke. The castle today houses a museum and the grounds offer a place to enjoy spectacular views over the River Gorge.

The Oldest Chemist Shop in the UK Knaresborough is also home to the oldest chemist shop in the country. Stnading in the high street this was opened in 1720. Today the shop is still open but now sells teas and handmade chocolates.

Travel

Knaresborough is served by rail links from Leeds, Harrogate and York by bus from these and other towns and is just 4 miles from the A1M motorway. A super place to spend a weekend or a lazy summer day.

Turkey's Exploding Tourist Market

Author: Samantha Berkin

Source: ezinearticles.com

Turkey enjoys not just a geographic location between Europe and the Middle East, but a cultural location somewhere in the middle as well. It is a country of fabulous variety, a hybrid of many different peoples, cultures, and ideas. Its proximity to Europe, beautiful destinations, and tourist-friendly attractions have made it a premiere destination for Europeans. In the last ten years, the number of foreign visitors to Turkey has increased from under 10 million to roughly 30 million people, a decidedly substantial increase. Turkey is currently one of the top 10 destinations in the world for tourism.....yet most Americans rarely hear about it. Even fewer visit. I think it is time to rethink that policy.

I have been personally curious about Turkey ever since high school, when I took Latin classes and slowly realized that the present-day locations of many of the sites we were reading about were located in this country. Troy, many Ancient Wonders of the World, and a few ancient authors (Herodotus springs to mind) all sprang from what is modern-day Turkey. My older sister was going to go with me when I graduated high school, but she decided to over-land Africa with me instead. Consequently, neither of us have yet been. Perhaps one day we will be lucky enough to cruise the Turkish Riviera and explore its deep-blue waters.

Most of the beach resorts and vacation destinations are located on the southern Aegean and the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The area has become increasingly popular with Spanish tourists in recent years, due to its proximity to Spain, the cheap price (relative to the south of France, for example), and its myriad natural wonders. Antalya, the tourist capital of this nation, is increasingly popular, not just with the Spaniards, but the ubiquitous German and English travelers as well.

Yet Turkey has much to offer beyond its gorgeous beaches. Istanbul is one of the most-visited cities worldwide, and has a wealth of attractions, go today, for just about any visitor. The city also makes for an interesting blend of cultures. As a holy site in Islam, Istanbul sees many pilgrims make the trek every year. Istanbul also has Europe's largest shopping mall. This mirrors the spiritual-material dichotomy which characterizes much of Turkey. A slow trickle of Americans is starting to come to this intriguing land. There has been a push in recent years to offer many tours to Turkey, especially amongst the larger companies. Yet Turkey has much more to give, and I feel the current tourist traffic is much less than the country merits.

Beyond the beaches are the many cultural attractions. Cappadocia is one of the prime must-see spots on my list for Turkey. The pictures of the landscape are absolutely fascinating. It has this sort of ruined, bizarre, sublimely beautiful feel to it. The underground cities of early fugitive Christians also greatly interest me. To hide in this landscape, underground, so close to the Holy Land.... These were hearty people.

Furthermore, the ancient ruins of numerous civilizations litter the landscape. Troy is located in Turkey, after all. Troy! Ephesus is another popular stop along the archaeological and cultural tourist route. Turkey was at the center of the Ottoman, Byzantine, Trojan, Greek, and Roman civilizations. It has always been at the crossroads of civilization, and in many respects this holds true today. I am honestly genuinely surprised by the lack of American tourist growth here. Does this reflect unease with the country's Muslim identity, and its proximity to Iraq, Iran, and Syria? I would like to believe this is not the case. For some reason, many Americans must not realize what a safe, friendly, frequently touristed destination Turkey is. Hopefully us Yanks will realize this sometime soon and not be left out of the party.

I'm a world traveler and recent Columbia University graduate. I'm looking to share some of my experiences/tips with others so they can discover their next perfect trip. I'm a little older than your usual graduate, because I took gobs of time off to travel extensively!

The Small Town of Lostwithiel, Cornwall

Author: Simon Haughtone

Source: ezinearticles.com

The small town of Lostwithiel, Cornwall, England lies nearly in the central region of the Cornwall Peninsula, in the southwestern region of the country and the United Kingdom. It lies on an estuary of a local waterway, the Fowey River. Today, it has a population of nearly 3, 000 people. It also sits on the A390, which is a road located in Cornwall and the neighboring county, Devon. It runs from Tavistock over to Truro, in the county.

There is a bit of history to Lostwithiel. It is known as a historic borough, the designation which it kept until it was re-categorized as a civil parish in the 1960s. It lost its two members to the unreformed House of Commons, which was the name the of the English House of Commons before the Reform Act of 1832 was enacted.

The town has the benefit of having a railway station in its midst. The Cornish Main Line railway runs through Lostwithiel, and runs from Plymouth to the famous old pirate town of Penzance. There are also several notable historical buildings within the town, including Saint Bartholomew's Church, a mainly 14th century structure with Grade 1 status, and the Restormel Castle, which is one of the four castles in Cornwall erected by the Normans during their reign in England.

Lostwithiel lies in the old tin-mining region of, go today, Cornwall and was once known as a stannary town. Stannary refers to mining activities involving that metal. At one time - due to its stature in tin mining - it was considered one of the most important towns in Cornwall, though that status is much reduced nowadays.

Cornwall is today designated as both a ceremonial county and a smaller unitary district within the English classification system of such regions. It makes up the entire tip of the southwestern peninsula of Great Britain. It is also bordered on two sides by bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean on the northern side and the English Channel on the southern side of the peninsula.

Boating. Not just a hole in the water in which people dump money, or is it?

Author: Rampdog

Source: articlerich.com

Some people have a passion for fast cars, some for motorcycles, and others for water sports, in this case boating. People who are serious about boating all agree that the best place to spend a day is on the water. That is about the only thing about boating that has not changed over, go today, the last few years. Enthusiasts all over the world are reaping the rewards of better ideas in boating that range from new mechanical technology to stronger equipment and better quality production process of today's hi tech factories.

One thing most people can agree on is that in the past boating has been fairly expensive to enjoy and it seemed like every year boats required more and more expensive repairs and maintenance to be able to use them as intended. It drove most boaters' nuts to spend as much time maintaining and repairing their boats as on the water enjoying them.

Lately, boat manufacturers have made great strides in improving the reliability of engines and electronic systems which have made boating a lot more enjoyable for all. Used to be that every other year or so the gear oil in the lower unit would have to be changed out. Today some brands claim their systems never need gear oil changes. On some outboard engines today there is no yearly winterizing that needs to be done, literally saving the owner thousands of dollars in costs over the life of the boat. What does this mean to the average boat owner? It means more time on the water and less and less cost, making boating more affordable than ever before for the average owner.

Another piece of boating that has undergone some changes recently is how boaters chose to own or acquire their boats. In some parts of the country a new form of ownership is taking shape in the form of Clubs. These boating "Clubs" actually purchase boats and as a member of the club you can enjoy all the benefits of boat ownership without the worry of maintenance, repair, upkeep, or hauling your boat around.

History of Royal Caribbean International

Author: Penelope Saxe

In the backward 1960's a accumulation of Norwegian address owners absitively to adventure, go today, into the rapidly growing American cruise market. They founded Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, now accepted as Royal Caribbean International. Today this cruise band is the world's second-largest and is acclaimed for its abiding innovations and arresting creativity.

Since "Song of Norway", the company's aboriginal address (no best in the fleet) set out on its aboriginal cruise in 1970, Royal Caribbean International has strived to accomplish the onboard acquaintance fun, absorbing and artlessly unforgettable. By 1972, the aggregation had two added ships: "Nordic Prince" and "Sun Viking", which they afterwards "stretched". In 1982, they congenital "Song of America", a abundant beyond address that became the archetypal for added cruise ships since.

Royal Caribbean's aboriginal above burst was in the year 1988, if they presented the apple with the aboriginal mega-ship in avant-garde times. Rightly alleged "Sovereign of the Seas", the 70,000-ton cruise address was monumental. It larboard the blow way behind, not alone due to its admeasurement but aswell due to its autogenous features. Sovereign of the Seas was the aboriginal cruise address to acquaint a shipboard antechamber or accession breadth that included bottle elevators and even a admirable piano. So, cruisers got best auberge analysis with a amazing ocean view. This mega-ship was carefully followed by two even beyond sisters: "Monarch of the Seas" and "Majesty of the Seas".

Of course, Royal Caribbean would chase up with four sister ships that apparent the way cruise ships would be from afresh on: "Navigator of the Seas", "Mariner of the Seas", "Explorer of the Seas" and "Adventure of the Seas".

At the aforementioned time, Royal Caribbean congenital the Radiance-class ships, which debuted in the aboriginal 2000's. These are a bit beyond than the Voyager ancestors and action added balconies, added dining choices and all in all, even added luxury. These ships are: "Radiance of the Seas", "Brilliance of the Seas", "Jewel of the Seas" and "Serenade of the Seas".

With all of these new ships sailing all about the world, the time came to refurbish the earlier associates of their fleet. The aggregation spent millions of dollars to clean Monarch of the Seas, Empress of the Seas, Sovereign of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas and Majesty of the Seas. Smiling Hospitality Of Akita Hotels

Author: nancy eben

Source: articledashboard.com

Akita has been a prominent city of the Tohuku area since the medieval times and it was in the year 1889 that the modern city was officially founded. It is today the capital city of the Akita prefecture. The advantage that Akita has is that its location is in close proximity to some of the most important oil fields in Japan. The chief industries of the city include oil refining, wood, metalworking and production of silk textiles. Akita is surrounded by a lot of river banks. Akita has always been a city connected with history. It has been witness to at least four historical periods viz., Edo, Meiji, Showa and Heisei. The chief neighboring cities today are Kita-Akita, Katagami, Yurihonjo, and Daisen amongst a few others.

The beginning of Akita dates to the Edo period. In the beginning a settlement known as Kubota Castle town was formed. The construction, go today, of this town began in 1604 and subsequently it became the center of Akita. The Meiji era was a period of further progress and it was in this period that the renaming of the Taihei School to Akita Normal School took shape on the 12th of April, 1878. The school system was then divided into 2 systems namely, the Kitaakita and Minamiakita districts. Akita was officially founded one year after that on the 1st of April, 1889.

Initially the major form of transportation was horse-car which began in July of its foundation year between Shindaikumachi to Tsuchizaki. This was to become the Akita City Rail Services in the years to come. In May the following year the first bank of Akita was inaugurated and commenced services. The Showa period was one of devastation and destruction as Japan was caught in the throes of war. The city was bombed into devastation on August 14, 1945. Akita had to unfortunately bear the brunt of what was supposedly the farthest range of bombing as well as the last bombing mission in World War II carried out in an air raid of 134 B-29s from midnight to dawn. A few hours later Japan announced its surrender.

The Heisei Era is associated with the period beginning April 1, 1997 when the city was integrated as one of Japan's core cities. Akita gained further prominence with the hosting of the "World Games" in August 2001. The 400th anniversary of the city was celebrated in 2004. Akita had come a long way since its humble beginnings as Kubota Castle Town.

January 11, 2005 was a turning point in the history of modern Akita city as the towns of Kawabe and Yuwa and the merger was celebrated with much fanfare. The locational position of Akita City Hall was left unchanged while the former Kawabe and Yuwa Town Halls were used as the civilian center.

Make advance room reservations in any Akita hotel for a fabulous holiday experience in the city which has seen a lot of history. The staff at any Akita hotel always greets you with smiling faces!

Elgin - Moray - is a town and commercial centre a few miles inland from the port of Lossiemouth on the west coast of Scotland. Elgin is a great place to spend a few days exploring the surrounding, go today, countryside and coastline. It is also well know for its many Whisky distilleries.

There is a wide selection of shops, cafes, and restaurants when compared with what's available in the nearby towns. It has a pedestrianized high street that contains many nineteenth century buildings that tower above the town square. When walking around the area you may also come across some buildings that date back to the thirteenth century.

At one time a castle was constructed on Lady Hill which overlooks the town, but today very little remains of this historical building. It is still worth climbing to the top of the hill for the magnificent vista's that can be had looking out over Elgin and to the coast.

As proof of Elgin's past importance there is the ruins of a once majestic cathedral. This was built in 1224 and was often described as the Lantern of the North. At one time it was the second biggest cathedral in all of Scotland. It is still worth a visit as what remains of the original building casts a beautiful impression of times past. There is still an ancient Pictish Cross on the site that predates the cathedral.

Elgin is situated on the main road that connects the larger towns of Inverness and Aberdeen. There is also a rail line that takes passengers to these towns. The main employer in Elgin and the area around is the Royal Air Force; there are bases at both Lossiemouth and Kinross.

There are a number of activities to be had within Elgin. In the evenings there are often shows put on at the local theatre and music venue. For sporting enthusiasts there is a golf course and also a boating lake.

Visit the Capitoline Hill in Rome

Author: Bispo Barbosa

Archaeological excavations began at the end of the 19th century and now the ruins,, go today, ranging from 1,400 to 2,500 years in age, can be explored.Near the Arch of Titus stands the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, the law courts of ancient Rome; Michelangelo copied its arches for St Peter's.Further in is the round Temple of Vesta, where the six Vestal Virgins tended the Eternal Flame of Rome.

The Vestals took vows of chastity before they were ten years of age, and lived by them for 30 years; if the vows were broken, the virgins were buried alive. Next door, the House of the Vestal Virgins, with its flowered garden, is one of the prettiest parts of the Forum. Close by lies an open space where political meetings were held and criminals executed. Here you'll find the Rostra, the platform from which politicians would address the crowd.

This is where Mark Antony made his "Friends, Romans and Countrymen" speech over Caesar's body, after which the mob burned their hero on the spot where the Temple of Divus Julius stands.Fresh flowers mark the location. The nearby Mamertine Prison is where St Peter was allegedly detained.Across the Via dei Fori Imperiali are the Imperial Forums, which contain Trajan's Markets, a massive ancient shopping and office complex.

On the west side of the Roman Forum is the Palatine hill. During Imperial times, this was the place for the city's rich and powerful to reside. The first emperor, Augustus, lived modestly up here, but his successors all built grand residences - today only traces remain. Green and flower-filled in spring, the Palatine is the most pleasant of the city's ancient sites to wander.

Introduction To Boating And Sailing

Author: Michelle Bery -

Source: articledashboard.com

Boating and sailing is not only one of the most popular pastimes today, they have been a popular means of transportation, recreation, and occupation, for nearly all of recorded history. Throughout history, boating and sailing has been a means for many of mankind's greatest discoveries, important battles, expansions and migrations, and a source of food and livelihood. While boating and sailing still maintain many of those roles today, for most of us boating and sailing are a source of recreation, fun, competition, and relaxation.

Today, boating and sailing provide a source of fun and recreation for millions of people worldwide. But there is more to recreational boating and sailing than simply buying a boat and launching it into the water. In order take the fullest advantage of all that boating and sailing have to offer, it is best to arm oneself with as much information as possible, go today, .

For those with an interest in boating and sailing the most obvious area of interest is the type of watercraft that will best suit their needs. Fishing, water sports, racing, or simply strolling across the water; all of these are activities are best enjoyed in the proper kind of boat. But the kind of boat you own also impacts the kind of storage needs you will have.

Smaller sailing and motor boats may not require permanent storage space such as a marina. They can often be stored at home and brought to the water on a car-towed trailer. Larger boats need to be moored at marinas where they are protected from the elements during the season, and in areas where the season is not year-round, marinas can remove boats from the water in order to protect them from damaging ice.

Those with an interest in boating and sailing must remember to protect more than just their boats. Protection of one's self is perhaps the highest priority when traveling on the open waters where conditions can change rapidly. Hot Springs In Malaga Spain In Roman Times & Today

Author:

Source: articledashboard.com

Most people know the famous places where one could ttravel to ake the waters. In Belguim there is, of course, the famous Spa the place where the very word "Spa" comes. Then in England you have Bath so aptly named with its very famous Roman Baths.

Nearly all of Iceland has multi Hot Spring locations as there are also many in North America and Rotorua in New Zealand to name but just a few.

Turning to Hot Spring in Spain one of Spain's better-known hot springs in located in the beautiful Andalucian region of Malaga. In the foothills of the Sierras on a mountainside to the north of the Guadalhorce Valley is the spa village of Carratraca.

This is one of the famed 'White Villages' of Andalucia, and Carratraca has been renowned for the curative properties of its sulphur-water springs for hundreds of years. The peak popularity of the village was during the 19th century, when the English poet Lord Byron was a frequent visitor. This ancient facility is constructed in the traditiona Roman way out of sandstone and marble.

Since time immemorial visitors have flocked to these places to take the waters, knowing full well that the effect will be to soothe aches and pains as well as providing the mental respite of escaping from the trials and tribulations of the stresses and strains of everyday life for a while.

Of course, the popularity of the locations of these hot springs comes at a price: more often than not they can get extremely overcrowded. Fortunately for those looking for a more intmate and private bathing experience, there are many more natural hot springs around. Some are located in out of the way places, known only to the locals; others are simply not as famous but they can often be far more pleasant. Alternatively of course one can have their own Hot Spring in a Hot Tub Jacuzzi Spa in their own garden or on a patio or a roof terrace.

Now what is the one thing that these Hot Spring Spas from the past do not have - it is of course an electric Air Blower (after all in days of old electricity had not been discovered) which is often fitted on many modern day spas.

The basic idea of air coming out of those pepper pot independent air jets in a Hot Tub Jacuzzi or as in some spas cleverly combined and mixed with water to provide air blower therapy which helps to increase the blood circulation to your skin and Doctors that I have spoken to have confirmed this train of thought. . Our skin represents by far the largest component of our body which helps us to remove poisons and the like. When our skin is invigorated, naturally our overall health is improved and this helps to remove toxins from our body and has a direct result in increasing our personal vitality as our mind body & soul receive the rejuvenating treatment.

It is a well known medical fact that the lower legs, the Tibia & Fibia areas, between the knee and the feet and ankles are the longest distance from our hearts. That is why if you break your leg below the knee the "lower third" is the area which is the hardest to heal often needing bone grafts to get the healing process on its way. I speak with personal experience having spent some months with my leg in traction with a broken femur and the leg below the knee in a plaster cast with a broken Tibia & Fibia. This lack of circulation is of course why the ankles can get those blue looking spidery blood veins, and then, go today, of course our legs often get varicose veins.

Gravity and the actual weight of the blood circulating causes higher blood pressure and what is often referred to by Chinese Doctors and acupuncture specialists as "stagnant blood". Of course in reality there is no such thing as stagnant blood; rather it is blood which is circulating slowly and not circulating as fast as it should.

When one submerses their body into warm water the blood becomes more or less neutral in weight as it has a similar weight to water. The effect of this is to reduce the pressure on your legs and at the same time the effects of gravity pulling on the body are much reduced.

What is missing however is the blower therapy, which is specifically designed by doctors to increase blood circulation in your skin, legs and feet. The effect is very similar to taking a nice warm fluffy towel and gently wrapping and rubbing this around your body and legs a bit like being immersed in ones own personal space.

A spa with an air blower does actually help to reduce those strange spidery blood veins that appear on ones feet and ankles. Use your air blower on your Hot Tub regularly to get the full benefit of your Hot Tub Jacuzzi Spa.

Author: Simon Haughtone

Bridgwater, in Somerset County of UK is a small town, rich in historical heritage, and once known as a major port situated on the south western part of the United Kingdom. Its name is derived from its French history, and the drop of the letter 'e' in its name is testimony to that. The name of the town is because it built a bridge over the River Taunton, with the King's Charter.

In the earlier centuries, ships used to moor near the Bridge, and the goods for internal Somerset would be carried overland. In turn, the ships used to carry Bridgwater clay bricks, known for its hardness and quality.

In fact the famed Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up British Parliament hatched his plan here sometime in the 1600s. Even today, after the plot was discovered, under the aegis of the then King, bornfires are lit to commemorate the occasion!

Today, the town is a vibrant mixture of the past and the present. It is a quiet, quaint little town which has its own historical monuments, landscaped gardens, and in line in British tradition, preserves its own, go today, values.

Among the many areas that are must see are the Admiral Blake Museum (for it is believed that Admiral Robert Blake was born here; he was Lord Cromwell's Admiral). The Somerset Brick and Tile Museum displays the olden methods of making bricks and tiles of clay for which the town as world famous.

The best way to see Bridgwater is to take walks, which are conducted by the local tourism authorities, which meanders around the small town, taking you through the plains, and the small hills and dales of what Somerset is famous for.

The carnival of Bridgwater is most famous for it is still carried forward since its very beginning in the early 1400s, and starts from November every year, till January/February in the next calendar year.

Accommodation ranges from the cheap to expensive, and suits all pockets. There are a wide variety of local eateries, ranging from the quaint old ones carried lovingly from generation to generation, and modern ones too.

Bridgend - Bridgend is a City at the End of a Bridge

Author: Simon Haughtone

Source: ezinearticles.com

Bridgend - Bridgend is located in South Wales on the River Ogmore and north of the River Ewenny. It is a very ancient city by modern standards and is thought to have been settled before the Romans came.

Some time after the conquest of England by the Normans, the Normans began to look to the west to find seats for William's lords. The Coity Castle had already been built at this time. By 1106 Newcastle Castle and Ogmore Castle were built. The three castles helped to establish a triangle that was defendable for the area.

The city developed before a bridge was ever built. There was a ford across River Ogmore and here is where the city developed. The stone bridge was built during the 1400s. The bridge was originally built with four arches, but a large flood wiped two of them out in the 1700s. The remainder of the bridge still stands today.

When coal was discovered in South Wales north of Bridgend, many industries came to the town. When the railroad arrived, Bridgend became a shipping point for the coal. Quarries opened around the city and it became a strong market town to provide supplies to the miners.

During World War II, Bridgend became the home of a POW camp for German Prisoners. During 1945 there were 67 POWs who escaped by way of a tunnel, go today, . All were recaptured. After the war, Bridgend went back to being a market town.

Today, the city has grown quite large. It is served by the railroad as well as bus service. Bicycling is encouraged in the city and is safe on most roads. In the city, you will find shopping, nightlife, music and sports.

Although Bridgend is a city with prehistoric roots, today you will find it to be a modern city.

North Cyprus Alter At Pighades

Author: Jessica I. Jones

Source: articledashboard.com

The Bronze Age sanctuary at Pigadhes dates back to about 1600 B.C. But we are "visiting" it at about 1300 B.C. At that time the eastern Mediterranean was being attacked by a confederation known as "People of the Sea." They conquered North Africa, Crete, Asia Minor, and the Levant each in their turn. The Egyptians called that tribe Peleset; the Bible calls them Philistines. Only Egypt was able to fend them off.

About this time we see the introduction of the Horns of Consecration in Cyprus, at Pighades and elsewhere. The Horns of Consecration are prominent in Crete and it is reasonable to assume Cretan refugees fleeing the People of the Sea brought this religious symbol to Crete.

In the present day, you can walk through the foundations of the sacred courtyard with the well and the altar. The altar is about twelve feet high and is crowned with the Horns of Consecration.

Imagine, if you will, that you can hear the thoughts of a Priestess of the Great Goddess who was worshipped here, a refugee from Crete, as she prepares for a festival.

We are refugees here, far from our native Crete. We were able to bring only the clothes we were wearing, we priestesses of the Goddess and our townsfolk, those who believed our words and fled with us across the sea.

We fled from the People of Sea. One of their kings sits in the great palace at Knossos. His underlings and soldiers are in every other stronghold on the coast. Our people are enslaved in their own land. And I fear that soon, soon, People of the Sea will come here to Cyprus, our refuge.

But today the poppies bloom in sun-kissed fields. We were given this property, sacred from time immemorial, to be our sanctuary. We built a dormitory, a school, and a dancing ground.

We have marked out only this dancing ground as a sacred space. We gave it a low wall so that all may watch, but only believers may enter. There is a well, to quench our thirst as we practice the sacred dance in the heat of the day. There is a bench where believers sit and watch. In some places there are mementoes of a believer who has died and gone back to the Goddess. In the center of our enclosure we built a tall tower, and on it, we put the horns of consecration.

The natives tell us this place is sacred to their goddess. We tell them the Goddess is one, ours and theirs. But they don't quite believe that and neither do we.

At home, we would be on a hilltop. But the natives do not trust us to share a hilltop. They fear we might signal to strange ships, bring on a pirate attack. But we would signal no one. If more of our townsfolk remain, they will find us. And as for others, we dread their coming, even if they come from Crete.

For we have had enough of palaces and priests. We shall live here in our little house, sharing what we have with the people. We have healing, and writing, and we have the Goddess.

Today we will dance, slowly spinning, slowly turning around the altar. We will drink the new wine, the blood of the earth. We will turn and turn, our wide skirts flaring, our bells jingling. And as the drums beat faster and pipes play higher, She will come. She comes upon us as morning mist upon the fields. She is Mother, and Sister, and Daughter. And so are we. So are we.

From a corner of the bench comes the drumbeat. Now we begin, slowly, slowly. We stand with our arms out from our shoulders and bent at the elbow so our hands are up. One leg points out and we turn on, go today, the other, so our flounced skirts flare.

An old woman brings a flask of wine. We drink deeply. The beat heightens. The sun pours down on our head-dresses. They are heavy with gilt thread. They force us to keep our heads up—no looking at our feet.

We want the beat to go faster, faster to take us quickly to the Goddess. But it is slow, so slow. We are patient as trees in a storm, for she comes to trees. We are steady as rocks, for she comes to rocks.

More wine. The sun is in the west now. As we turn we have brightness in our eyes one moment and darkness the next. Without our years of training, we would surely stumble.

And now, at last, the beat of the drum lets us spin loose, faster, faster. There is no world but the flash of golden sun, then blackness, light and dark, light and dark, faster and faster.

She comes. We are lifted up and we fly around her as she stands there between the horns of consecration on the high altar. We are spinning like leaves in a whirlwind. And she is the still center of the universe standing in our midst.

It is forever, it is an instant. We cannot sustain this contact with the divine. We are but mortal. We sink to the ground. Were we really flying? Did we really see Her?

The Castle Hotels Of Spain

Author: Gary Bumpas

Source: articledashboard.com

What could possibly be more romantic than staying in a castle hotel in Spain?!

Castles loom from out of a distant past, and beckon to us still today to come and experience the ambience of another time. To actually stay in a castle is to partake of that rare ambience - to walk in the footsteps of history, and to insert oneself into the feeling of that ancient time - even if just for a few days or weeks.

There are around two thousand castles and castle ruins in Spain. The Paradores de Turismo Hotel Network of Spain have gone to great lengths and spent many millions of dollars in order to acquire and restore some of the finest examples of these castles. They have been converted into castle hotels of the highest quality, and these provide fine accommodations of a kind not to be found in other types of hotels.
In each case, as much of the original castle as possible has been left intact. Of course, all private areas (your bedroom, bathroom, and living areas) have been modernized to meet even the most discriminating tastes.

There are currently fifteen castle hotels in the Parador chain. Some were built by the Visigoths, some by the Moors, others by the Spaniards during the reconquest, and later. These castles most often served as fortified residences that housed knights and barons, or kings and queens - as well as the local populace during times of attack and siege.

The architectural styles of these castle hotels runs the gamut - from just utilitarian medieval, to Celtic, Gothic, Plateresque, Romanesque, and Renaissance. They contain in varying combinations all the attributes that helps make castles so fascinating; towers and turrets, ramparts and moats, labyrinthine passages and fanciful courtyards. As well, many of the Parador castle hotels have on display the armor, weaponry, tapestries, and other authentic trappings of their epoch.

Each castle is situated in a strategic location. They invariably afford wonderful, panoramic views out over the surrounding countryside and city below.

The castles of Spain stand today as silent witnesses to the greatest events in the history of the country.

Almost all of the Parador's fine castle hotels carry a 4-star rating, and they are spread out over the length and breadth of the land, so no matter what part of Spain you are visiting, there will be a nearby option to sleep in a luxurious castle.

In the far northeast of Spain, Galicia, you will find the old walled fortress of Baiona. This former governor's mansion-cum-castle is situated uniquely on a fortified peninsula that juts out into the sea.

Moving southeast, you would encounter the 12th century castle-Parador at Benevente between Leon and Salamanca. Further east the picturesque castle of the Parador Olite south of Pamplona. Then further east still - inside Catalonia and near Barcelona, there is the mighty 9th century fortress at Cardona.
Going south from Cardona to just inside the border of Aragon, you'll find the castle hotel of Alcaniz which belonged to the warrior-priest order of Calatrava in the 13th century.

Then on south of Alcaniz and near the Mediterranean is the castle hotel and Parador at Tortosa. Officially named the Castillo De La Zuda, it is from the 10th century with both Moorish and Gothic elements in it's design. The traveler might now decide to cross back in a westerly direction and encounter the medieval behemoth that is the castle hotel at Siguenza.

Continuing a westward path all the way to near the Portuguese border, there is the historically important 14th century castle at Ciudad Rodrigo. The wonderful tower - the Torre De Homenaje - provides incredible views across the plains below. Traveling south towards Extramadura, the castle hotels at Oropesa and Jarandilla De La Vera provide a distinct difference in architectural styles - the former having a majestic and forebodingly powerful presence, while the latter has the feeling of a Renaissance Palace.

The castle Parador at Alarcon, between Madrid and Valencia, is one of the very finest examples of a perfectly, go today, preserved castle from the 8th century. It only has 14 bedrooms, so it can be somewhat of a rare treat when you manage to secure a room there. The great castle hotels in the south of Spain are at Zafra, Jaen, Carmona - and even across the straits of Gibraltar at Ceuta in north Africa.

The Parador castle hotels are true architectural and historical treasures. Your experience staying in these unique places will be far beyond the usual "charming bed-and-breakfast" hotel experience. In ancient times, their walls blocked out the incursions of marauders and attackers - and still today these same walls continue to block out the incursion of time itself.
To spend a few nights in one of these marvelous castle hotels is to take a step back into history.

Let yourself go . . . and revel in the romance, chivalry, and mystery of another age.
