Does this sound familiar - the engines roar, you're thrown back into your seat for take-off, and the knuckles on your hands turn white as you grip the armrest for dear life? Air travel has become so integral a part of all our lives that we perhaps sometimes forget just how frightening it can be to many. A fear of flying, or aerophobia, can make any trip by air, for vacation or business, a potential nightmare. Indeed, a recent article in USA Today suggested that a fear of flying "cripples - or at least burdens - the careers of millions of Americans".
So what can you do to combat your fear of flying?
Firstly, take a deep breath. However difficult it may be, remind yourself that the chances of being involved in an accident are astonishingly low. Per million passenger miles, air travel is by far the safest form of transportation.
Try not to consume too much alcohol before the flight, or once you're up there. Apart from potentially rendering you unfit to fly, alcohol at altitude can actually exacerbate feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety.
On board, several airlines try to make the whole process of flying that much easier for those of a nervous disposition. A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic said: "We have a dedicated Flying Without Fear audio channel to help anyone through their flight. On selected flights we also have a meditainment channel giving our passengers the chance for some quality deep relaxation whilst flying with us."
Many have turned to hypnotherapy to try to overturn an often debilitating fear of flying. Chris Thomas, a hypnotherapist with Vision Coaching Services, says: "Flying phobias can be caused by either by conditioning stemming from a single frightening event; masked general anxieties from past experience, learned gradually over time either first hand or from others, or as a result of 'distorted' thoughts about airtravel. These fears are usually irrational and are usually deep within our subconscious."
Thomas adds: "Even at airports all the wrong words are used unintentionally which condition people to fear flying. Examples of such expressions include "terminal, final destination, final approach, insurance desk, departure lounge and last and final call. Particularly post September the 11th peoples, go today, fears are brought to the fore with armed police are highly visible adding to the tension."
Finally, if things are really bad, get yourself onto one of the courses run by several major airlines: British Airways and Virgin both hold courses for nervous flyers. They don't come cheap, though: Virgin charges ฃ199 for its one-day course, BA charges ฃ235 - but the net result could be well worth it.
A BA spokesperson said: "Lack of control, claustrophobia, heights and fear of falling are the concerns of many nervous passengers. The psychologist will give some positive ways of coping with and minimising these fears and will conduct a relaxation session just prior to the flight."
British Airways claims a 95% success rate for the 40,000 passengers who've passed through their Fear of Flying programme.

A Look at Brixham, Devon

England is full of wonderful places to visit. It is one of the greatest features of the country. There are so many great getaway spots that are close by. One area that is popular is Brixham, Devon. Brixham is a nice town where you can fish. It is located at the southwest of England and on the south end of Torbay. Most people know Brixham as a fishing port.

The reason the town works so well as a fishing port is because it is so hilly. It is built around the harbor. Today, the harbor is still used as a dock for fishing trawlers. One of the most interesting things about the harbor is a famous replica ship is permanently docked there. The ship is a replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship and it is called the Golden Hind.

Today you might think Brixham's fishing port is relatively small, however, during the Middle Ages, it was the largest fishing port in the south west. The boats that came into the port at that time helped establish many fishing industries.

Another interesting fact about the harbor is the hundreds of ships that have been literally shipwrecked and found in Brixham. Many believe that the rocks around Brixham wrecked these ships. However, others think they were surprised by storms and the ships simply landed at Brixham.

The city obviously makes a lot of its income from fishing. The fishing industry is undoubtedly the largest in Brixham. However, there are many local industries that deal with stone. Limestone, go today, is used for many things in Brixham. Also, the mineral orche is widely used in Brixham. It is used for shipping purposes, paint, and other items.

If you visit Brixham in the summer, you can experience the Cowtown carnival. The main attraction for this event during the summer is the Hap'nin that occurs in St. Mary's Park. The Hap'nin is an annual music event. During the event, local bands play. It is a fun event to participate in and definitely a way to experience the culture of Brixham.

Another thing that you definitely want to do in Brixham is check out the archery club, the Brixham Archers. Archery is huge in Brixham. Besides archery, people in Brixham also play a lot of Rugby like other fellow Englanders.

Brixham is definitely unique. There is no place quite like it. It is a wonderful town that has a rich history.

Thinking about traveling to Spain? As you can imagine, the architecture of Barcelona, the Holy Monstreat, and the Toledo cathedral make this a popular coordinate. And because this is such a hot travel spot, you're advised to make your airline reservations, hotel reservations, and car rental preparations early - three to four months in advance as a matter of fact - especially when tourism is likely to be high (summer months, holidays, etc.). If you prefer to travel "off-season," - that is, during a time when tourism is low, you may not need to make such early reservations. In the latter case, one month-advanced preparation may suffice.


After you've made your reservations, you can fulfill the rest of your time preparing for everything that Spain has to offer. One of the ways that you can do that is by taking a local trip to your favorite library and perusing the immense number of books about Spain. By doing this, you can prepare yourself with the language - perhaps even check out a few books or audio tapes of the language (if available) and additionally learn about Spain's monetary system.



You should always learn about entry requirements, inoculations and other safety information you might need before you go not only to Spain - but also just about anywhere out of the country. But you can also familiarize yourself with the dress of the land and maybe try a few local restaurants that serve Spanish cuisine and play a little of its native music. Of course you can always visit your museum and inquire about the art of the land so that you'll know what to look for once you get there - in particular, the works of El Greco. The idea here is to educate yourself amid all the excitement of visiting a place so rich in culture!



Now some people like spontaneity - a little adventure - the unknown - whatever you want to call it, but some of us like to create an itinerary of things to do and places to go. If you're the "planning type," then you might appreciate taking the time to map out your excursion. And there's certainly nothing wrong with that - seeing that you're visiting a new area, your chances of being bored or going against spontaneity are very slim because Spain has so much to offer to each one of your physical senses!



When and if you create such an itinerary, some of the things that you will want to include of course are things like times to eat, take tours, attend shows, and (our favorite) shop! You might think that this information is hard to find but thanks to the Internet, it really isn't' hard to find at all. If you're working with a travel agent, then your efforts to fill an itinerary should be pretty minimal. But if you're working alone, you can certainly visit the tourist websites of Spain and create your own chart of things to discover and enjoy.



If you're handy with the native language of Spain (which you might have correctly guessed is Spanish), you can certainly read a few online Spanish newspapers to find events and locals that might be of interest to you. Chances are that you'll find a lot more entertainment information by reading a Spanish newspaper than you would if you solely relied on an English interpretation.



Once you've arrived and have found transportation to your hotel, you can inquire further to find even more interests. By this time, you should be speaking a little Spanish so that you can effectively communicate and exchange money with your hotel manager:

Just remember to pack your camera or your small video cam so that you can record your experience and enjoy them with loved ones back home.

Traveling by taxi in Spain provides an extremely convenient way to move about and "sight-see." Like traveling by taxi in the United States, minimum charges accompany metered mileage plus a small additional fee for baggage and evening - night - or holiday drives.



Spain Driving Tips



European Union citizens (18 years or older) must own a national driving license to drive in Spain, however non-European Union citizens (18 years or older) also need an International Driving Permit as well. Both types of citizens must have car insurance and identification (license, passport, etc.) by law, is required at all times. Seat belts must be worn by all passengers, and travelers under the age of 14 must be seated in the back seat of the vehicle. When driving, remember that driving positions are reversed to American drivers. You must yield to on-coming traffic from junctures and traffic circles.



Special care should be taken to restrict your driving to the main routes outlined on the most recent maps of this area as other routes may not be appropriate for driving (dirt roads, mountain passes, etc.). In urban areas, you can conveniently refuel your vehicle from unleaded or diesel gas stations. But if you'll drive for long periods of time, it's wise to completely fill your tank, as fuel stations are sparse in rural sections of the country.



Driving speeds are generally restricted to 30 mph to 56 mph, however driving speeds can increase from 62 mph to 75 mph on highways with more than two lanes. Be prepared to pay both variable and fixed toll charges associated with city entry ways.

When you go on vacation to Cuba or Puerto Rico, you must make time to visit the Dominican Republic. Many people rent holiday villas and self catering apartments when they go on holiday there.

The Town of Didcot, Oxfordshire

The town of Didcot, Oxfordshire, England lies only about 10 miles to the south of the historic and world famous town of Oxford. Today, it enjoys a population of around 26, 000 people. It is interesting to note that until 1974 this town was a part of the county of Berkshire.

Didcot's history can be traced back to the Iron Age, where a settlement was located on a ridge within the town proper. Most of the surrounding area at that time consisted of uninhabitable marshland. There is evidence that the Roman occupiers of the day made, go today, efforts to drain those marshes by digging a long outflow ditch.

The actual recorded history of Didcot seems to have begun in the 13th century, where the name "Dudcotte" was found in documents that placed the town, as was said, in Berkshire. For much of its early history thereafter, the total population count of the town hovered around 100 or so people. In fact, the town was quite a bit smaller than many surrounding villages back then, though it dominates all around it today.

Didcot benefitted from the arrival of the railway 1839, which eventually grew into a large covered station in 1844, though this original version burned in a fire later that century. Didcot, lying as it did at a strategic junction that connected London, Bristol and Oxford, was valued highly by the military, and it was used extensively to supply troops for the push back into Europe, on D-Day.

The ceremonial and non-metropolitan county of Oxfordshire, in which Didcot resides, enjoys a current population of around 636, 000 people. It lies in the southeastern part of England, and has the University of Oxford, which is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, within its borders. The county has an extremely vigorous tourist industry, containing as it does numerous places of historic interest. Both Didcot and Oxfordshire are sterling examples of classic English life.

Gibsonton, Florida

Gibsonton was named in 1926 after James Gibson, a settler who, in the 1880s, bought 150 acres at the mouth of the Alafia River. The town was at various times called Garden City, Adamsville and "The Kitchen" for the bountiful supply of fish, oyster and other seafood provided by Tampa Bay. In the 1940s, the 8'4" giant Al Tomaini and his wife Jeanie the half-girl, a 2'6" woman born without legs, stopped in Gibsonton while touring with the circus. The Tomaini's found the land plentiful and affordable and so decided to stay, and other sideshow personalities quickly followed suit. Over the years, the community was home to innumerable dwarves and many famous performers, including Percilla the Monkey Girl, the Lobster Boy and the Human Blockhead, the last of the famous performers who died in 2001. Because the carnival zoning laws still exist so, too, do circus performers, who continue to winter and retire here despite the slow demise of circus-type entertainment with the birth of the electronic world.

Shopping and Dining

Most Gibtown folk drive to nearby Brandon, Riverview or Tampa for an expansive list of dining and shopping options, such as the Westfield mall in Brandon or Hyde Park Village and Westshore Plaza in Tampa. A new Applebee's and McDonald's opened down the road in Apollo Beach in 2007. Within town, try the Tropicana Bar, a Gibtown fixture on US 41 since 1961, you'll know you're arrived when you see the Tropicana's colorful mural with views of the tropics and local sports. Or, drop by Showtown USA, a sports bar on the corner of US 41 and Mott Road, this one you'll know by its colorful murals of carnival and circus life; the murals, when first painted, were too risqu? to be considered family fare and so were repainted quickly to portray the more acceptable, go today, murals you see today. River's Edge Lounge is another local favorite; on Ohio Avenue, this rustic riverfront bar and grill caters to bikers and boaters alike.

Leisure and Play

There's lots to do in and around Gibsonton! Being home to the International Independent Showmen's Association, Gibsonton is host to the week long "super trade show extravaganza" for the circus, amusement and carnival industry. It is also home to East Bay Speedway on Burts Road, a 1/3 mile oval dirt track where many races and events take place throughout the year. For more quiet enjoyment, head over to Williams Park on Riverview Drive. With picnic areas and public boat ramps, Williams Park is considered one of the top freshwater fishing locales in the Tampa Bay area. Or try the Gardenville Recreation Center and Park on Symmes Road, with its new $1.6 million facility, after school programs, and outdoor sports galore.

Gibsonton is also home to Bird and Sunken Isles, two manmade islands that, when formed in the 1920s by dredging at the mouth of the Alafia River, became an important nesting site for gulls, terns and skimmers. Today the islands are known as the Richard Paul Sanctuary; they are owned by the local phosphate company and leased to the Audubon Society for $1 a year. Up to 18,000 pairs of up to 20 species of birds nest there, making the Paul Sanctuary one of the largest colonies in Florida and one of the most diverse in the continental United States. The Sanctuary is, at this writing, only available to local schools although there is talk of opening the area for public enjoyment as well.

Even though you might not be able to visit the Sanctuary, you can certainly visit 80-acre Alafia Scrub Preserve, just east of I-75 on Gibsonton Drive. The preserve, one of many in the area, offers a hiking trail and nature study opportunities.

Airline travel is regarded as a necessary evil today. Between the Fort Knox-like security checks, lost luggage, cramped seating, and ever-vanishing services, it's getting harder to see light at the end of the flying tunnel. But is this the way it has to be? Could you, with a slight attitude adjustment and some simple suggestions, transform that burdensome flight into a a few much-needed hours of productivity and personal betterment? Our last article discussed 5 ways to make the plane ride comfortable and enjoyable. Today, you'll learn 5 ways to spend that enjoyable and comfortable flight on productive, life-bettering things - things you would probably never take the time to do if you weren't on an airplane.

1) Introspection

The life of a busy, traveling businessman (or woman) doesn't leave much time for the personal reflection we all need. Luckily, with a notepad and the right mindset, the hours spent sitting still on an airplane can be used for just this purpose! While on the flight, simply think about your life, your goals, your relationships or hobbies - whatever it is that makes you tick. Reflect on your place in the world, where you've been, and where you are going. Ask yourself if there is anything you are not doing, but want to do, or should be doing. Grab a window seat if you can, and try to let your mind wander. Write down what occurs to you, and see if you haven't come to any new or exciting realizations by the time you land!

2) Drawing up a time revolution

Are you spending your time in the most efficient, effective way? Paradoxically, most of us don't have time to sit down and figure this out! But since you're going to be sitting still for hours on an airplane, you now do. According to David Koch in his excellent book "The 80/20 Principle", almost everyone, "whether ultra-busy or ultra-idle, needs a time revolution." Koch goes on to explain that "most of our significant achievements are achieved in a minority of our time" and "most of our happiness occurs during bounded periods of time." Taking this into account, it follows that you should identify what periods of time you are most productive and happy in, and try to maximize the time spent in those areas. Could you be spending your days in a more satisfying way? With a little thinking, you might be able to have a full time revolution mapped out by landing time!

3) Sudoku puzzles and MENSA riddles

Sudoku puzzles are an excellent, highly portable way to sharpen your mind while you sit idle during flights. These logic-based number placement puzzles are sold in booklets, can be clipped out of newspapers, or accessed on laptops and handheld PDAs. You might not be able to get any physical exercise on the flight, but there's no reason you can't use Sudoku puzzles or MENSA riddles (a lateral thinking-based riddle game) to keep your mind in shape!

4) Wisely chosen reading material

Plenty of people bring comic books, throwaway romance novels, and issues of Cosmopolitan on airplanes. While there's nothing inherently wrong with such pleasure reading, this type of reading does little to enhance or better our minds! You probably don't get a lot of free time, so why would you spend a precious three or five hour (or longer) flight on such intellectually barren reading? A much better idea would be to read something mentally challenging instead - say, a business book, an autobiography of a public figure, or something about your field of, go today, expertise. Literature on the country you are visiting is another good bet. Such books or magazines can impart a great deal of wisdom in the time it takes to fly!

5) Any computerized or written work you've been putting off

Like most of us, you probably have some type of work you've been putting off - drawing up a new budget for the company, finishing something for a client, writing that long-overdue article, etc. What better time to get caught up than during your flight? If the work you've been putting off can be done on a laptop or pen and paper, there's probably no better way to spend the flight than that. While everyone elses exits the plane cramped, tired, and jetlagged, you will bask in the satisfaction of finished work and a spotless to-do list!

Cassadaga is about 30 miles northeast of downtown Orlando just off Interstate 4 on the way to Daytona Beach. The name is a Seneca Indian word meaning 'rocks beneath the water', although it's not clear why it was used in Cassadaga's case.

The town was founded in 1875 by George Colby, a Northern Spiritualist who said he was told during a séance that he would found such a place in the South. His spirit guide, Seneca, it is said, led him to the Cassadaga site.

What's A Spirtualist?

If you're a Spiritualist, you believe that the spirit survives physical death and moves into another dimension where it continues to exist as an individual, with all the characteristics of its human personality.

It's commonly held that spirits actively seek communication with the world they have left behind. 'Mediums" are go-betweens. They help them do this.

In the late 1800s, a number of religious communities, including the Koreshan Unity and Shakers, were founded in Florida. Cassadaga is one of the few that remain today.

It's said that Colby's séance that led him to establish Cassadaga in Florida took place in Iowa, my home state. I can believe that, and here's why:

As a child of 10 in the 1940s in Iowa, I was taken by my parents to a relative's house every Friday night where we would play 'Table Up', as we called it.

The only requirements were a card table and three persons with 10 fingers each. The four chair (or none at all) was vacant. All 30 fingertips had to touch the table (nothing special about the table) and the three participants (endowed, I supposed then, with certain electrical traits) would begin to chant in unison, 'Table up, table up, table up,' until eventually the vacant side of the card table lifted off the floor.

Folks, I am not making this up.

And then the fun began. Like an Ouiji Board, the table could be asked any question and it would answer by rising up and down. I don't remember, go today, exactly how the answers were determined.

As a 10-year-old, I don't recall any relative referring to this as a séance, but I think that's what Spiritualists would call it. That's because they say it is someone's spirit answering the questions by lifting the fourth side of the card table. In other words, it is communicating with the dead.

Can you imagine - even with today's whiz-bang toys - there can be more fun for a 10-year-old than 'Table Up'?

I can't confirm that 'Table Up' is played in this place in Florida. You may want to visit Cassadaga to find out for yourself.

To this day, I think we were talking to dead relatives when we played 'Table Up' in Iowa, and you can believe that or not.

WHAT CAUSES FEAR OF FLYING?There are a lot of ways that you can become afraid of flying. You might experience strong turbulence during a flight, or experience what you consider to be a "close call". You might have a panic attack on a plane, and thereafter fear having another one if you fly again. You might find that the continuing media emphasis on "scary flying stories" leads you to become afraid. You might experience a stressful period in your life during which flying becomes progressively more difficult for you. You might experience a traumatic event (unrelated to flying) shortly before a flight, which leads you to become afraid on the flight. Many people have developed a fear of flying in response to the 9/11 terrorism.There are a lot of ways that people become afraid. But one way that people don't become afraid is this: they don't set out to discover the most dangerous activities they engage in, and then avoid those. No! A phobia is not a logical process. You become afraid for one reason or another, and then come to believe that your fear means that flying is too dangerous, even though virtually everyone regularly engages in activities which are much more dangerous than flying. Maybe you avoid flying altogether, or maybe you continue to fly with fear, but in some way you resist and struggle against your fear, and that is precisely what maintains it!WHAT DO PEOPLE FEAR?There are basically two kinds of fears people experience about flying: fears of crashing and dying; and claustrophobic fears of being "trapped" in the airplane once the door is shut. Some people experience only one type, in a pure form, and some experience a mixture, but in both types of fears the essential element is an overemphasis on control.Safety statistics show, and I think probably everyone is aware of this, that flying is much safer than driving. Yet a fearful flyer who drives tends to assume that, because he/she is "at the wheel" (and therefore "in control") that he/she will be able to avoid any accidents, or be better prepared to deal with any that may arise; will be more likely to arrive on time; will be better able to get help in the event of a medical emergency, and so on.Even people whose fears are purely claustrophobic will strive for this sense of control. I once worked with a client who was claustrophobic, in elevators and airplanes. On our first occasion to leave my office and go to practice with elevators, we took his car - because, naturally, he wanted to drive! And he had the tiniest car I had ever seen! I mentioned to him how ironic it was, that a claustrophobic person should have such a tiny, cramped car. He replied, "It's OK as long as I'm at the wheel!"Fearful flyers thus try to feel better by trying to feel "in control" of various aspects of the flight experience. Fearful flyers I have worked with have tried to feel "in control" of the situation by doing such things as:monitoring the weather channel during the days before a flight insisting on flying on certain types of aircraft which they regard as more safeasking to see pictures of the pilot's children (on the theory that if he/she has children, that's more motivation to live!)avoiding conversation during takeoffs and landings so they can "monitor" the procedureswearing "lucky" clothes, avoiding "unlucky" days and flight numbers, and engaging in a variety of ritualspretending they are not on a plane, or forcing themselves to think about something elseplaying loud music on their headphones, in order to prevent themselves from thinking about the flighttensing up their bodyholding the armrest in a death griprefusing to move from their seat during the flight trying hard to appear unafraidsedating themselves with alcohol and/or tranquilizers and a variety of other activities, most of which maintain and increase a person's anxiety level, rather than decrease it.HOW DO PEOPLE GET OVER THIS FEAR?A fearful flyer generally needs an entirely new strategy for tackling this problem, because the solutions a fearful flyer usually tries tend to make the fear worse, not better. It's a case of "the harder I try, the worse it gets". A passenger is a person who presents himself/herself at the gate and turns over the responsiblity of flying to those who are trained and paid to do the job; who makes no effort to control that which he cannot control; and whose only job during the flight is to wait, while allowing himself/herself to be as comfortable as possible. As a passenger, you are literally "baggage that breathes"! As a passenger, you need to know how to accept and work with your emotions and fears, rather than resist them.CAN I GET OVER THIS?In my work with fearful flyers, I see people who haven't flown for twenty years, or even longer; and I see people who fly more than a hundred thousand miles a year, because their work demands it. They're all afraid, frustrated, and skeptical when they come to me. The ones who haven't flown for a long time often can't even imagine ever getting on a plane. The ones who are still flying wonder why all that flying doesn't help them become less afraid, and despair of ever feeling better. I can tell you, however, that the great majority of these people make an excellent recovery and resume flying in relative comfort.At the Anxiety Treatment Center, we offer classes for fearful flyers several times each year. In this program, we teach people a general strategy for being a passenger, and many specific coping techniques. We teach people ways to cope with their anticipatory anxiety in the days and weeks ahead of a flight, as well as the anxiety they experience during the flight.We also meet with a pilot, who answers the group's questions about safety, how flying works, what all those noises mean, and so on.
