Bridgwater, in Somerset County of UK is a small town, rich in historical heritage, and once known as a major port situated on the south western part of the United Kingdom. Bridgend - Bridgend is located in South Wales on the River Ogmore and north of the River Ewenny. It is a very ancient city by modern standards and is thought to have been settled before the Romans came.

Some time after the conquest of England by the Normans, the Normans began to look to the west to find seats for William's lords. The Coity Castle had already been built at this time. By 1106 Newcastle Castle and Ogmore Castle were built. The three castles helped to establish a triangle that was defendable for the area.

The city developed before a bridge was ever built. There was a ford across River Ogmore and here is where the city developed. The stone bridge was built during the 1400s. The bridge was originally built with four arches, but a large flood wiped two of them out in the 1700s. The remainder of the bridge still stands today.

When coal was discovered in South Wales north of Bridgend, many industries came to the town. When the railroad arrived, Bridgend became a shipping point for the coal. Quarries opened around the city and it became a strong market town to provide supplies to the miners.

During World War II, Bridgend became the home of a POW camp for German Prisoners. During 1945 there were 67 POWs who escaped by way of a tunnel, go today, . All were recaptured. After the war, Bridgend went back to being a market town.

About this time we see the introduction of the Horns of Consecration in Cyprus, at Pighades and elsewhere. The Horns of Consecration are prominent in Crete and it is reasonable to assume Cretan refugees fleeing the People of the Sea brought this religious symbol to Crete.

In the present day, you can walk through the foundations of the sacred courtyard with the well and the altar. The altar is about twelve feet high and is crowned with the Horns of Consecration.

Imagine, if you will, that you can hear the thoughts of a Priestess of the Great Goddess who was worshipped here, a refugee from Crete, as she prepares for a festival.

We are refugees here, far from our native Crete. We were able to bring only the clothes we were wearing, we priestesses of the Goddess and our townsfolk, those who believed our words and fled with us across the sea.

We fled from the People of Sea. One of their kings sits in the great palace at Knossos. His underlings and soldiers are in every other stronghold on the coast. Our people are enslaved in their own land. And I fear that soon, soon, People of the Sea will come here to Cyprus, our refuge.

But today the poppies bloom in sun-kissed fields. We were given this property, sacred from time immemorial, to be our sanctuary. We built a dormitory, a school, and a dancing ground.

We have marked out only this dancing ground as a sacred space. We gave it a low wall so that all may watch, but only believers may enter. There is a well, to quench our thirst as we practice the sacred dance in the heat of the day. There is a bench where believers sit and watch. In some places there are mementoes of a believer who has died and gone back to the Goddess. In the center of our enclosure we built a tall tower, and on it, we put the horns of consecration.

The natives tell us this place is sacred to their goddess. We tell them the Goddess is one, ours and theirs. But they don't quite believe that and neither do we.

At home, we would be on a hilltop. But the natives do not trust us to share a hilltop. They fear we might signal to strange ships, bring on a pirate attack. But we would signal no one. If more of our townsfolk remain, they will find us. And as for others, we dread their coming, even if they come from Crete.

For we have had enough of palaces and priests. We shall live here in our little house, sharing what we have with the people. We have healing, and writing, and we have the Goddess.

Today we will dance, slowly spinning, slowly turning around the altar. We will drink the new wine, the blood of the earth. We will turn and turn, our wide skirts flaring, our bells jingling. Ski chaletsare a strange hybrid of hotel and second home. They were invented forty years ago to provide a safe haven in the European Alps for the English, who hated going abroad yet looked on the Alps as their own. They could relax without having to speak a foreign language, and their appetites would be satisfied by a boiled egg and a bowl of porridge for breakfast, rather than 'some awful foreign muck'.

Initially, a handful of Brit entrepreneurs rented some private chalets for a winter (one bath to 12 people). They installed breathless young 'gels', who said they could cook but couldn't, gave them a miserable housekeeping budget up front which the girls spent on themselves, and told them get on with it.

The Brits lapped it up. Strapping young men came out in their droves to sample first the chalet girls, then the skiing, and finally what there was in the way of food. There was none to speak of as the chalet girls were too busy skiing with the young men, and had already blown the food budget. To calm them down when they came back from skiing 'absolutely starving', the gels would bake the young men a cake for tea. Then they let them drink loads of paint stripper, known in smart, go today, circles as 'vin rouge', before, during and after an awful dinner.

But it didn't matter - everybody loved it. The bachelors went home in love, and the Brit entrepreneurs were coining it in. The gels, who were paid a pittance, could supplement their meagre incomes by sending a telegram home to Daddy, who was frightfully important in the City.

After about fifteen years things were beginning to look a bit tawdry. The catered ski chalet ethos was well and truly established but starting to get a bad name; the punters wanted something better. They had a lot more to spend as Mrs Thatcher was in charge. Changes were afoot. Unreliable chalet girls were replaced by girls who could cook, or couples of a more responsible nature, who would share chalet duties with ski guiding.

There was enough money sloshing around in the eighties for keen independent skiers to buy properties in the Alps and set up small operations of their own. There were, and of course still are, large tour operators with dozens of chalets, but the very nature of a catered chalet holiday is the personal service that a group of friends can get from like minded people, whose livelihood depends on making them feel welcome and relaxed.

Yesterday's rough and ready has been replaced by today's sophisticated. Competition is strong, mainly because so many people have upped sticks from the UK, and set up in the mountains where they see an easier way of life and a more relaxed way to run a business.

The service offered by today's independent chalet owners is almost unrecognisable compared to that of the sixties. Bedrooms mostly come with their own bathroom, the food can be first class (many a five star chef is plying his trade in the relative peace of the Alps) and the wine is of a superior quality nowadays, but is still usually unlimited. There are exceptions of course, and it's still possible to find budget ski accommodation not unlike the early sixties. Basically you get what you pay for, and if you want cheap and cheerful, it's not difficult to find!

The best ski chalets are often designed and furnished to remarkable standards, complete with saunas, satellite phones and broadband connections. Skiing with the guests is often offered as a complementary service, as is a minibus, which doubles as a taxi service from the airport.

Strangely though, there is still cake for tea ...

During the ensuing centuries the area of sea just off the Outer Banks was coined by US Statemen Alexander Hamilton to be the "graveyard of the Atlantic." Scores of ships were sunk and hundreds of lives were lost as storms marched up the coast as they crept past the islands. The American government, in an attempt to provide navigational assistance, constructed lighthouses along these shores. Even today four of these ancient watchmen continue to stand although their lights have long since been extinguished.

Much later, in 1903 to be exact, two brothers from Ohio, Wilbur and Orville Wright, attempted to make the first manned flight of an aircraft from Kill Devil Hills. Their twelve second voyage was short and sweet, and the rest is now history.

Other outstanding features of the Outer Banks include: Jockey's Ridge State Park featuring the highest sand dunes on the east coast; the Cape Hatteras National Seashore; wildlife refuges, go today, and maritime forests; and a whole host of recreational activities including: kite flying, deep sea fishing, swimming, boating, and more.

One of the most glamorous ports in the Mediterranean is Cannes. This world renowned port famous for the International Film Festival was once a small fishing village owned by monks.
Further up the coast, on the Bay of Angels, is the capital of the Riviera, Nice. Here one can experience some of the best restaurants. While wandering past the high-class apartments, hotels, and caf้s, one can get magnificent views of the Mediterranean.
North of Nice on the Mediterranean is the municipality of Monaco. Of course, we all know the name Mont Carlo as the home of chic casinos, luxurious hotel resorts and fabulous beaches. Italian Riviera
At the top of the 'boot' of Italy just east of the French Riviera and you'll find the Italian Riviera. Situated on the shores of the Ligurian Sea, the Italian Riviera is glamorous but in a distinctly old-fashioned way. The rustic and provincial are blended together with the elegant and chic as cosmopolitan cities and small towns come together.
Portofino is one of the most photographed villages on the coast of the Italian Riviera. Many of Europe's wealthy visit this small harbor even though there is little to do there. San Remo, the largest resort in the area is also considered the capital of the Italian Riviera. It offers visitors world class hotels, and a romantic setting with its exotic gardens. And oh yes, the famous casino!

Mayan Riviera
As more cruisers and vacationers travel the Caribbean, the Mayan Riviera is becoming better known and extremely popular. A Short Guide to the Western South African Coast

South Africa is a diverse country steeped in historical and cultural significance and astounding natural beauty. Its coastline is no exception, and being home to the nation's legislative capital, the Western coast of the country is perhaps the example of past, present and future day South Africa. In regards to getting there, many airlines are currently offering cheap flights to Cape Town in an effort to entice recession-weary travellers out of the Eurozone - so could 2009 be the year of South African tourism?

Starting in the North West of the country, the Namakwa District is known for its unspoilt, go today, expanses and semi-desert appearance which is perfect for walkers and explorers eager to seek out such sights as incredible lava rock formations and untouched coastline. Springbok, the area's capital, is home to over 14,000 inhabitants and is famed for the amazing transformation that occurs at springtime, when the dry scrubland becomes awash with floral colour after the rains.

If you travel about 95 kilometres South West from Springbok then you get to the even quieter coastal village of Hondeklip Bay, where the arid land meets the sea. The small harbour was once the centre for the exportation of copper ore but has since become replaced by the more easily accessible Port Nolloth. Today the village is used today by fishermen and local diamond miners, but is also a popular destination for tourists who seek clean beaches and peace.

Further down the coast and into the West Coast District Municipality you come to the natural harbour of Saldanha Bay, where the land is far greener. Saldanha boasts a larger population and begins to show the more developed side of South Africa with an economy dependant on seafood and the steel industry. The area has strong historical ties as it was the location of the Battle of Saldanha Bay in 1796, and the significant archaeological find: Saldanha man. Whales are also known to be spotted from the coast at certain times of the year.

Cape Town, is the second biggest city in South Africa after Johannesburg and the most visited tourist destination in the country. Aside from attractions such as Cape Point and Table Mountain, the city is also home to a number of beautiful beaches - including the warmer False Bay and Boulders Beach which is even home to penguins. The city also boasts unique and colourful architecture with European influences and many cultural/historical attractions also.
